Basalt Fiber composites are strong, light and cost effective. Black Diamond Basalt (BDX Basalt) is currently focused on using the significant advantages this material offers to gain rapid scale by marketing products to disrupt existing markets in glass and carbon rovings and steel rebar.
Basalt fiber is a material made from extremely fine fibers of basalt, composed of the mineral's plagioclase, pyroxene, and olivine. It is similar to fiberglass, having much better physical mechanical properties, and being significantly cheaper than carbon fiber.
While the material characteristics of basalt are excellent, the material has yet to gain significant market share in any application. This has been due to technical difficulties in production, lack of consistency in material, no provision to date of large-scale production capacity, and BFRP not being included in construction codes.
Proven production processes, solid sources of supply, and inexpensive energy are keys to our U.S.A. production. Material characteristics, to our knowledge, are testing superior to any commercially available product. BDX has many alternative markets to explore of which we have identified 30 of interest.
